CM – Gasly suffers a « shocking » mistake while hunting for Bottas

Pierre Gasly was hit by a « shocking » failure of the front wing while trying to beat Valtteri Bottas in qualifying at the Qatar Grand Prix.

Bottas was third behind team-mate Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen when they were last runs took place in Q3. The AlphaTauri driver ran open a little on the penultimate corner, his front wing broke, fell under the car and punctured his right front tire, preventing him from completing his lap.

Fortunately for Gasly, this means his fastest lap so far that he will start from P4 👏 # QatarGP 🇶🇦 # F1 pic.twitter.com/Ah5WmjNT93

« Qualifying was fantastic, the whole weekend has been really, really good so far, » said Gasly. “I think this track is one of my favorites too – easy to drive, the car has good balance, we can really push it to the limit and it was really great to drive here.

I improved by 1.5 tenths so I think we were very close to Valtteri – I don’t know if he improved or not, but our lap went really well together. On the outside of Turn 15 I pushed a little more, it was pretty shocking to lose the entire front wing inside the car and just blow the entire front right tire, so that was it.

« At the end of the day we did our job, qualified fourth behind the top two teams and it’s been a really impressive weekend for our team so far. «

Gasly admits that the recent failure was not a big one for AlphaTauri, given similar problems in previous races The surprise is that although he didn’t think he went far enough into the corner to risk such a problem.

“We know our front wing is really weak compared to others – I lost it in Bahrain , I lost it in Monza, I lost it over the various curbs in Sochi, so it seems really fragile. I have to check – it didn’t seem like I went super far, but it clearly broke suddenly. «
