CM – Glen de Vries, who flew into space with William Shatner, dies in a plane crash

November 12 (UPI) – Businessman Glen de Vries, who flew into space with William Shatner on a Blue Origin rocket in October, died in a plane crash in New Jersey on Thursday, police said. He was 49.
New Jersey State Police confirmed that in the crash in Hampton Township, 60 miles west of New York City, de Vries of New York and Thomas P. Fischer, 54, of Hopatcong, N.J.

November 12 (UPI) – Businessman Glen de Vries, who flew into space with William Shatner on a Blue Origin rocket in October, died in a plane crash in New Jersey on Thursday, police said. He was 49. New Jersey State Police confirmed that in the crash in Hampton Township, 60 miles west of New York City, de Vries of New York and Thomas P. Fischer, 54, of Hopatcong, N.J.

De Vries co-founded New York-based software company Medidata Solutions, which released a statement on Friday on his death: « Our thoughts and support are with Glen’s family. Our deepest condolences also go to our Medidata- Team that Glen co-founded. His relentless energy, empathy and pioneering spirit shaped everyone who knew him. We will truly miss Glen, but the dreams we share live on.  »

In October he flew into space on a New Shepard rocket from Texas, along with Shatner, businessman and former NASA engineer Chris Boshuizen, and Audrey Powers, vice president of missions and operations, Blue Origin chief executive.

« We are devastated to hear of Glen de Vries’ sudden death, » wrote Blue Origin on Twitter. « He gave so much life and energy to the entire Blue Origin team and his crewmates. His passion for aviation, his charitable work and his commitment to his craft will long be revered and admired. »

In an interview after After flying into space with his alma mater, Carnegie Mellon University, de Vries said he had a lifelong interest in space and science. He said the event changed him, especially seeing Earth from space, and wanted to spend more time promoting space travel for more people.

« There’s such a stark contrast between Earth and space, and that line we all live between is terrifyingly small, « he said. “If we really want the earth to be as beautiful as we as humans can live on it and enjoy it, we urgently need to think about preserving the environment.
