Godin spent up to nine years at Atletico from 2010 to 2019, playing more than 250 LaLiga games.
Since then he has played for Inter Milan and then for Cagliari, where he is today.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Godin will be leaving Cagliari in January to end his contract early.
According to the report, the center-back wants to return to Atletico Madrid and will sign cheaply if necessary.
It is claimed that money will go to Godin is not an issue as he is trying to complete a dream return to Atleti.
The veteran would not be the first choice for Los Rojiblancos given the presence of Stefan Savic, Jose Maria Gimenez, Mario Hermoso and Felipe.
But he could provide cover and extra guidance as Atleti try to defend his La Liga crown.
