CM – Gophers and Colorado meet former coordinator Mike Sanford Jr on September 17th

After the Gophers soccer team opened the 2022 season with Kill at the helm of New Mexico at Huntington Bank Stadium on September 1st, Minnesota welcomes Sanford and Colorado on September 17th.

Sanford, who was fired from the Gophers’ offensive coordinator at the end of November, has been hired by the Buffaloes as the new offensive coordinator, the school announced on Friday.

Sanford’s passing offensive lagged behind the troubled attack in 2021, but head coach P.J. Fleck spoke broadly about why he had decided not to bring Sanford back in 2022.

« I just had the feeling that we needed a change on the offensive, » said Fleck on December 5th. “Mike is a great person and a wonderful football coach. I just had the feeling that in this position we needed a new direction in leadership.  »

The Gophers reinstated Kirk Ciarrocca as offensive coordinator on December 6th and last week extended the contract for defensive coordinator Joe Rossi. Rossi’s defense eliminated the Buffaloes in a 30-0 win at Boulder on September 18.

« Mike’s extensive experience and ancestry speak for themselves, » said Colorado trainer Karl Dorrell in a statement. « What attracted me to him was his familiarity with the Pac-12 and this part of the country, his coaching experience, his success as a coordinator and the development of players throughout his career. »

Prior to Minnesota, Sanford spent three seasons 2011-13 at Stanford, then Boise State, Notre Dame, Western Kentucky, and Utah State, before joining Minnesota for the 2020 season.
