MUMBAI: Sri Lankan pacemaker Lasith Malinga has said that he has won many fans in India and the rest of the world by playing for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians.

Earlier this week, Malinga announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Malinga’s stay at MI also ended with a rather memorable ending – with a final ball win that earned the Mumbai Indians a fourth IPL trophy in 2019.

« When I played with Mumbai Indians, I have a lot of fans in India and all over the world. I have a feeling that all young cricketers have a dream – to play franchise cricket, especially IPL, and the national team. So I want to share my experience with Mumbai Indians who have excellent support. That’s why I want to I explain how I joined the IPL team « , the official Mumbai Indian website quoted Malinga.

» In 2008 I had the opportunity to give my name for the auction, after which I received a call from my manager who told me that this year I would get the chance to play with Mumbai Indians, he asked me not to worry and that there were two other Sri Lankan cricketers there also mentioned that I have good owners – Mr. Mukesh Ambani and Ms. Nita Ambani, « he added.

Malinga continued, » The manager also mentioned the team’s support staff and the team with the most experienced players of the time. I only had 3.5 years of international experience. I thought it was good to go there and get some experience. « For the national team. In 2008 I was really unlucky. First I had a knee injury, then I missed the IPL and lost the Sri Lankan one-year contract. »

« 2009, after a year and a half, all the doctors and physiotherapists were saying that if I wanted to play I would have to play short games to continue my cricket journey. That meant I had to play T20. But I did. I had no chance in that National team and I had only one option: to go to South Africa and play in the IPL. I explained that to the Sri Lankan Cricket Board and they understood the situation. In 2009 I finally went to South Africa to do my MI- Team, « he added.

Sri Lanka’s 2014 T20 World Cup captain Lasith Malinga announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Tuesday.

Malinga made his test debut against Australia in July 2004. 16 days after his test debut, Malinga played his first match in ODI cricket.

Known for his toe-breaking Yorkers, Malinga has taken 4 wickets of 4 consecutive balls twice in international cricket. Malinga, who ended in the shortest format with 107 wickets, made his T20I debut against England in June 2006.
