British actress Helen McCrory, whose notable TV credits include Peaky Blinders and Penny Dreadful, has died of cancer. She was 52 years old.
McCrory’s husband, billionaire star Damian Lewis, shared the news in a tweet Friday, saying, “I am broken to announce that the beautiful and powerful wife, Helen McCrory, is after a heroic battle with cancer died peacefully at home surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family. She died while she was alive. Fearless. God we love her and we know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. It was blazing so brightly. Now, kid, get up in the air and thank you. «
TV stars we lost in 2021
For the past few years, McCrory has been perhaps best known on the small screen as Shelby family matriarch Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders, a role she played in season 5. However, her long list of credits also included Penny Dreadful, where she stole scenes as the villain Madame Kali, Anna Karenina, Fearless and Life, in which Lewis starred as the protagonist Charlie Crews. Her most recent credit was the voice of Dæmon Stelmaria on HBO’s His Dark Materials.
McCrory’s prolific career also included many film roles, such as Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter series and Cherie Blair in The Queen. She has also appeared in stage productions such as Macbeth, Pride and Prejudice, Twelfth Night, and the Greek tragedy Medea, in which she played the title character in 2014.
