Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attend an official photo opportunity in London on November 27, 2017 to announce their engagement at The Sunken Gardens at Kensington Palace.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their second child on Friday , a daughter, a spokesman for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told BuzzFeed News Sunday. « Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty the Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet, » the Sussex spokeswoman said. « Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, the Princess of Wales.
Here is more about these two names and their meanings to Harry, Meghan and the Royal Family:
Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of York, future Queen Elizabeth II, was born on April 21, 1926. Her father, George, Duke of York, was the second son of the then monarch King George V and was second in line to the throne, behind his older brother David, Prince of Wales. Elizabeth became third in line to the throne when she was born.
Biographer Carolly Erickson writes in her biography Lilibet: An Intimate Portrait of Elizabeth II that the little girl when she was too began to speak, had difficulty pronouncing her name, and at the age of two and a half referred to himself as « Lilliebeth » or « Tillabet. »
Erickson writes that it was Elizabeth’s grandfather, King George V, who gave the two names com and nicknamed his granddaughter « Lilibet » who stayed with her all her life.

But Harry and Meghan’s decision to use Diana as their baby’s middle name is especially poignant given some of the things Harry recently said about his mother in Apple TV documentaries on mental health, whom he co-produced with Oprah Winfrey, The Me You Can Not See.
On the documentary series, Harry said he had « no doubt » that his mother would be « incredibly proud » of him for retiring from working life in the royal family .
« I live the life that she wanted to live for herself, the life that she wanted to make possible for us, » he said. “So I not only know that she is incredibly proud of me, but that she helped me get here. And I’ve never felt her presence as strongly as last year. «
» I wish she could have met Meghan. I wish she was there for Archie, ”Harry said. He added that there is a photo of Diana hanging in his two year old son’s nursery and one of Archie’s first words after « Mama » and « Papa » was « Grandma » and then « Grandma Diana ».
« It’s the cutest thing, but at the same time it makes me really sad because she should be here. «

Until 1917, the members of the British royal family had no official surname. They just walked past the dynasty or the house they belonged to (think the Tudors, Stuarts, the House of Hanover, etc.).
In 1917, King George VI, Queen Victoria’s grandson, sat on the Throne. His father was the first king of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (this was the family name of Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who was born in Germany).
The increasing anti-German mood in Great Britain during the First World War – and the fall from royalty across Europe at the time – however, inspired George V to change the name to something more patriotic. He chose « Windsor », named after the castle, and decreed that all male descendants of Queen Victoria would bear this name.
When the granddaughter of George V ascended the throne as Queen Elizabeth II in 1952, she decided, to keep the dynasty name of Windsor, but in 1960 she and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh decided that they wanted their direct descendants to have a different surname from the rest of the very large enlarged royal family. Since Philip had adopted the name Philip Mountbatten when he renounced his title of Prince Philip of Greece prior to their marriage, they chose « Mountbatten-Windsor » as their immediate family’s last name.
