Subaru will fully unveil the rally sedan at the New York Auto Show in August.
The Subaru WRX is an iconic performance car, an all-wheel drive sedan that was born out of rallying and is its own 30th (!) Year of production is approaching. A brand new sixth generation WRX is on the way and we don’t have to wait long for it. Subaru announced today that the 2022 WRX will debut at the New York International Auto Show on August 19th and has released a teaser video that gives us our best look at the new rally sedan yet.
The video shows an orange limousine gliding through the desert, accompanied by the noises of a boxer engine and de rigueur action film-like soundtrack. A lot of details are obviously hidden, but pause the video and you’ll see taillights very similar to those on the new BRZ and other unique styling details. As with the previous generation WRX, the 2022 model should look very different from a standard Impreza.But like the Impreza, the 2022 WRX will run on the Global Platform, which underpins all new Subaru models, and all-wheel drive will of course become standard being. We also expect the WRX to adopt a version of Subaru’s FA24 2.4-liter flat-four. In the Ascent, Outback, and Legacy, the turbocharged FA24F puts out 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, but expect more in the WRX. And as before, the WRX will likely give buyers a choice of a six-speed manual or a CVT. No points to guess which we prefer.
Between this one and the new Nissan Z, this year’s pandemic-delayed New York Auto Show will be a good one for Japanese performance cars. We can hardly wait.
