England’s Paul Casey and Sam Horsfield shared the early lead on day one when the postponed 149th Open Championship began at Royal St George’s.

Andy Sullivan and Paul Casey posted a few birdies in their first holes to get two on the sandwich links in sunny but airy conditions – with gusts of wind of up to 40 km / h.

Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters champion, rolled in an eight-foot on the first and took another shot on the fifth.

Casey made his approach to three feet first, played easier as it was downwind to get the best possible start, and he followed suit by knocking it tight on the third par-three. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Sullivan hit the first group at 6:35 and immediately made the par 4 with the birdie and won another shot in the fourth.

He could have been outnumbered by three if he hadn’t hammered his birdie attempt over the top of the cup and then the 35-year-old couldn’t find the fairway twice at par-five seventh and with his third and the green the green missed. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Bogeying to drop back into a tie on one underneath.

However, he won the dropped shot back to eight to make it an English three-way tie at the top.

Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland, who won the Claret Jug the last time the Open came to St. George’s in 2011, opened with a bogey five.

Shane Lowry’s long wait to defend his Open title was due to begin at 9:58 a.m. in the marquee group alongside newest major golf winner Jon Rahm and 2010 champion Louis Oosthuizen.

In a group half an hour ahead of him were Jordan Spieth, who won the 2017 Open, last year’s US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau and South African Branden Grace.

Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, the 2014 winner, will be dating American Ryder Cup rival Patrick Reed and Australian Cameron Smith at 3:21 pm. Casey went clean at the front when Sullivan bogeyed the ninth to turn in 34, but immediately birdie the next by 18 feet to come back to two under.

But Sullivan’s erratic lap continued after finding the front bunker at par-three 11 and splashing 15 feet after the pin for his third bogey of the morning.

Meanwhile, Willett fell away after taking another shot on the seventh, but another Englishman, Sam Horsfield, switched to two under after two consecutive birdies on the sixth.
