On the volcano Cumbre Vieja on the Canary Island of La Palma, a new column opened today, Thursday, November 25th. This news was announced by Involcan, the volcanological institute of the Canary Islands, on their official Twitter account at around 5.15 a.m. Canarian time.
This new opening is located south of the main core of the volcano and, according to Involcan, already encounters a large amount of lava the end. It is believed that this new opening could well cause more cracks to open. The new stream flows at about 600 m / hour and unfortunately goes towards further infrastructure on the island.
Its rapid river has already buried the Las Manchas cemetery this afternoon and destroyed another 40 properties, including farmhouses and the surrounding farmland. The photovoltaic system is also threatened, as the stream destroys everything that stands in its way.
“It has a very exuberant behavior. It has surfaced in the past few hours. There is a large amount of lava in the pictures, ”said an Involcan spokesman. Add: « It is necessary to see whether this crevice is able to form new cones or mouths ».
In his press conference, Miguel Angel Morcuende, the technical director of Pevolca, explained the special plan to protect against volcanic risks of the Canary Islands that the new wash has surfaced this morning and is running parallel to the tenth.
Morcuende called this new column « bad news » because the new river of molten lava flows through areas previously unaffected by lava , « And destroys what he finds on his way, he has passed the Las Manchas cemetery ».
