Performer and longtime Global Citizen Ambassador Hugh Jackman has urged Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison to attend COP26, a global summit on climate change, with the Australian ethos of « fair deal for all » and specifically urged Morrison « Compromise and listen » in the face of climate change.

In the video posted on Jackman’s social media accounts Monday, the Wolverine actor says « the stakes couldn’t be higher. »
« The aftermath of this meeting will affect the future of our planet, » wrote Jackman. “I speak today as a world citizen, but also as an Australian citizen. Our Prime Minister and his team are here. I’m relieved that they finally agreed and I’m relieved that they committed Australia to a net zero emissions target by 2050, but it feels like that’s the bare minimum. ”

The new one Politicians, however, fail to set bold new goals for the next decade, which will be crucial if the world is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The plan, which is not anchored in law and heavily reliant on the advancement of low-emission technologies, continues to rely on dangerous fossil fuels.

In his speech at COP26, Morrison said the « Australian way » to tackle climate change is to to rely on the success of specialists.
« The challenge of combating climate change is being met by those who, frankly, most of them are not in this room, » he said. “It will be our scientists, our technologists or engineers, our entrepreneurs, our industrialists and our financiers who will actually take the path to net zero. It is up to us as heads of government to support them. «

In the first few days of the nearly two-week summit, over 100 countries signed a « breakthrough commitment » – led by the United States and the European Union – to reduce harmful methane emissions by 30% by 2030 from 2020 levels.
Australia, along with Russia, Iran, India and China, refused to join the global push.

However, Australia has committed to ending deforestation by 2030.

The effects of a warming, changing global climate are already being felt around the world.

However, severe droughts, storms, rising sea levels, floods and heat waves disproportionately threaten the world’s most vulnerable people and affect access for individuals and entire communities housing, food, health care and decent livelihoods.

Those living in poverty are the least contributors to global warming, but will undoubtedly bear the brunt of the crisis.
To counter this impact, Jackman ended his video with a call for global collaboration.
“We have to come together; we need Team Planet Earth, ”he said.
