Sri Lanka provided a 15-person squad for next month’s Twenty20 World Cup but said they were undecided whether to play against Afghanistan because of the Taliban’s reported sports ban on women.

Sri Lanka Cricket kept Dasun Shanaka as captain with Dhananjaya de Silva as his deputy for the T20 World Cup, which takes place from October 17th to November 14th in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

« We have now completed the roster but we have yet to make a decision on Afghanistan, « Sri Lankan cricket board secretary Mohan de Silva told AFP.

 » We are aware of reports that some (teams) may be playing in Afghanistan because of the Taliban’s stance on boycotting women, but we still have to make a decision about it, « said de Silva.

Tim Paine, captain of the Australian test, said Friday he believed si ch teams could withdraw from the Twenty20 tournament or boycott games against Afghanistan unless the Taliban regime changes its stance on women’s sports.

According to the regulations of the International Cricket Council, nations with testing status must also have an active women’s team.

Australia on Wednesday said it would cancel a first test against Afghanistan in Hobart in November unless the Taliban return.

The new Taliban administration in Kabul has made it clear that it will endorse the cricket The national team will allow men to play their games abroad, but will not allow women to participate in the sport.
