BAKU (Azerbaijan): Wales captain Gareth Bale said on Friday that he was unconcerned about his international goal drought on the eve of his team’s European Championship opener against Switzerland.
The 31-year-old Bale scored most recently in October 2019 for Wales against Croatia, but scored four goals in their last seven appearances.
The Bale team will start their campaign on Saturday in Azerbaijan in the competition that has been postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Real Madrid forward, who was on loan at Tottenham last season, has scored 33 goals in 92 appearances since his debut in 2006, but his goalless career spans 11 games.
Wales manager Robert Page, who will lead the team during the tournament as Ryan Giggs is on trial in England, supported his star player.
« It’s not the end of the world. If he doesn’t score, he’ll score, » said Page.
The semi-finalists of the Euro 20 16, Aaron Ramsey rested for two friendly matches before the competition and the Juventus midfielder skipped training on Thursday.
The 30-year-old Ramsey also missed the Italian club’s last five games in Serie A with fitness problems.
« There are no problems with Aaron at all. He didn’t train yesterday. That was always part of the plan, « said Page.
Former Welsh skipper Page is representing Giggs while the ex-Manchester United winger is on trial next year for deliberately headbutted his ex-girlfriend and she throughout their relationship.
Giggs denies all allegations, and previously issued a statement saying he was looking forward to « clearing my name. »
