CM – Ind vs NZ 1st test, day 1 highlights: India hits 258/4 on stumps

Check out the highlights of India's first test against New Zealand, Day 1, taking place in Kanpur on November 25th.

Check out the highlights of India’s first test against New Zealand, Day 1, which will take place in Kanpur on November 25th.

A rigorous trial of the Indian spin attack led by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will await New Zealand when the two teams clash in the first of two Tests at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium on Thursday, November 25th. While New Zealand, the current test world championship holder, looks to start the second cycle victorious, India will aim to turn the tables if the competition leads 3-2 in the last five test sessions.

For the hosts Who will do without the services of Virat Kohli (returning for the second test), Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and an injured KL Rahul, it is a chance to try younger players on the batting team with the immediately following South Africa tour.

Rahul’s absence means the plan to play Shubman Gill in the middle will not materialize. With Shreyas Iyer making his debut batting in medium order, India will be relying a lot on more experienced thugs in Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Mayank Agarwal to step up. The only division India won’t be short of firepower will be Spin. In the last game between the two teams here in 2016, Ashwin and Jadeja selected 16 of the 20 New Zealand wickets.

Overall, Ashwin became the main tormentor with 27 wickets, while Jadeja had 14 in his name and left New Zealand in one spin. If the pitch stays the same as it was in 2016, expect Ashwin and Jadeja to lead the demolition job for India with the ball with Axar Patel, who picked 27 wickets at home in Tests against England earlier this year.

India (from): Ajinkya Rahane (captain), Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj Jayant Yadav , Srikar Bharat (2nd week) and Prasidh Krishna.

New Zealand (from): Kane Williamson (captain), Tom Latham (wk), Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Tom Blundell (wk), Will Young, Glenn Phillips (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Kyle Jamieson, William Sommerville, Ajaz Patel, Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra.

What a debut for Shreyas Iyer. He didn’t look in any trouble today. Without any nerves. Played his strokes and refused to be pressured after India grappled with Rahane’s wicket fall. He was competently supported by Ravindra Jadeja, who has to beat faster in tests. He has a chance in Kanpur and he used it well.

NZ couldn’t throw six overs today due to poor light. We still don’t have an official word on whether the game would start tomorrow morning to make up for the lost overs. However, it is difficult to start the game early in the winter in northern India as the cities are usually covered in fog / smog.

Time to say goodbye. It was wonderful to have you all with us in this report. Visit us tomorrow at 9.30am IST on our live blog. Have a nice day and goodbye.

India takes over the light and Iyer, Jadeja go back into the changing room. The lights had been exhausted for the past half hour and the referees decided it was too dark to play cricket, offered light to hit and accepted it.

And Ravindra Jadeja is also in his half century. Here he plays brilliantly. India plays well against the second new ball. Jadeja, particularly keen to hit the new ball, scored two back-to-back limits from Jamieson.

IND 241/4 after 80 overs

The second new ball was adopted by New Zealand as soon as it became available. Kyle Jamieson has the new red cherry in his hands. And the last ten overs so he could get a wicket or two. Important overs for Indians too.

Jadeja and Iyer are doing well for India here. Jadeja was now approaching his fifty. He has a chance to hit higher when Pant isn’t here. And he’s using it for a good cause. Five more overs to the second new ball.

He did it. Iyer hits his first Test fifty on debut. A nice straight drive for a single that brings its first milestone as a test battery. Now he has to get on with his good work. India also goes past 200.

He’s making his debut but he’s playing so well it seems like he’s had fifty game experience behind him. Iyer is only five runs away from his first Test fifty.

Debutant Shreyas Iyer decides to pursue Rachin Ravindra – breaking consecutive boundaries to hit 44. India is 192/4 in 63 overs.

Shreyas Iyer led his debut colleague Rachin Ravindra through the covers for his third border and followed him with a three after short third man to move to 24 after the tea break. India hits 162/4 in 58 overs.

Debutant Shreyas Iyer held NZ Bowler at bay with a sullen innings of 17 of 55 balls with rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the middle at 6. India is 154/4 at tee in 56 overs .

Big Kyle Jamieson fires substitute captain Ajinkya Rahane, who pulls a delivery back on the stump after surviving an appeal against the previous ball. Rahane passes India at 145/4 in 50th for 35 of 63 balls.

Ajinkya Rahane seems to have found his form. The replacement skipper defeated Will Somerville for his sixth foursome to come to 35. India hit 145/3 in 49 overs after a few quick wickets right after lunch.

Substitute captain Ajinkya Rahane is wonderfully pushing Will Somerville through the roof for his third four to advance to 24. India. India at 127/3 in 45 overs.

Shreyas Iyer survived a steeling chance on Test debut to beat Ajaz Patel’s mark, then smashed the left arm spinner for a four in the 41st over. India is 119/3 in 41 overs.

Substitute captain Ajinkya Rahane survives a narrow leg-before appeal. New Zealand opts for a wire transfer on the 40th, with Tim Southee catching Rahane on the pad. Rahane survives with a ball hitting outside the stump. Skipper smashes a boundary by covering the 5th ball to get to 17. India is 113/3 in 40 overs.

Tim Southee makes the decisive breakthrough and gives Vice-Captain Cheteshwar Pujara an advantage who leaves after 26. India is 106/3 in 38 overs.

Substitute captain Ajinkya Rahane beautifully drives Ajaz Patel through the covers for 4 to bring India’s 100. Hosts hit 106/2 in 37 overs, with Cheteshwar Pujara sending a full throw for 4 through mid-wicket in the same over.

Kyle Jamieson lets Shubman Gill’s stumps fly, missing the opener for 52. India is 82/2 in 30 overs.

Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara made sure India lost just one wicket on the first day before lunch and hit 82/1 after 29 overs. Gill was unbeaten at 52 and Pujara at 15.

Shubman Gill brought up his fourth half century in 81-ball test cricket the first day before lunch. India hits 80/1 in 27 overs.

Shubman Gill and vice-captain Cheteshwar Pujara brought the 50-run score past for the second wicket on the 23rd. Gill is unbeaten at 47, while Pujara has nine, while India hit 71/1 in 23 overs.

Shubman Gill mid-wicket Tim Southee for his second four, followed by a pair to close to 22 move. India hits 43/1 in 16th past.

Shubman Gill reached his first limit of the game, powerfully cutting off left spinner Ajaz Patel to advance to 15. India hit 31/1 in 11 overs.

Kyle Jamieson breaks New Zealand’s first breakthrough, bringing Mayank Agarwal to goalkeeper for 13. India is 21/1.

Mayank Agarwal pushed Tim Southe between goalkeeper in the fifth half and first slip down the floor to reach India’s first limit of the test. India hits 15/0 after 5 overs.

Opener Mayank Agarwal easily negotiates first from Tim Southee. India is 3/0 after opening.
