If you took 4/20 pretty seriously and celebrated Weed Day, there may be a real reason for Rastafarians to rejoice. Weed Day, also known as April 20th, is now celebrated as Peter Tosh Day in memory of the late musician.
Known as the « Godfather of cannabis legalization, » Tosh fought to break the stigma surrounding cannabis . He did this through his music. His album of the same name and his single ‘Legalize It’ were a huge hit. It wasn’t just about legalizing the herb, it was also about victimization of people by the Jamaican police. Winston Hubert McIntosh, who was born in Westmoreland, Jamaica, in 1944 and later changed his name to Peter Tosh, was already in attracted to music at a young age. His mother influenced him greatly, and since he grew up a Christian, he attended church every day. Here he began singing as part of the choir and even learned to play the organ.
In the 1960s, Tosh met Robert Nesta Marley and Neville O’Reilly Livingston through contact with singing teacher Joe Higgs, who gave free music lessons. The trio, known by the names of Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh, performed together often. Tosh soon formed a band called « Wailing Waillers, » along with Bunny, Marley, Junior Braithwaite, a falsettist and backup singer Beverley Kelso and Cherry Smith. Tosh played a very important role – he was a self-taught guitarist and keyboardist and the only person who could play instruments.
The other members of the band left the band in 1965, along with Marley, who was with his mother in the United States spent. He returned to Jamaica in 1967 and since Tosh and Bunny were already Rastafarians, he too accepted the belief. The trio soon became the « Wailers, » as Tosh explained. It was her way of « expressing his feelings out loud ». He is also believed to be the first to teach Marley how to play the guitar as he was the only one who could play instruments when they formed the band.
Tosh played and even produced several solo works that matched his form of activism. He sang over songs in hopes of drawing attention to various subjects. According to his website, some of his favorite solo works are « Equal Rights », the unstoppable unity anthem « African », the ganja manifesto « Legalize It » and his intriguing, indelible version of Joe Higgs « Stepping Razor ».
After Tosh’s early and tragic death by armed men who held him hostage in 1987 and tried to steal money from him, his legacy lived on due to his contributions to music and Rastafarian culture. His foundation, the Peter Tosh Foundation, continued the « fight Peter began decades ago to legalize cannabis » and advocated its use for wellness education, research and development activities. The foundation is currently at the forefront of legalization issues in the US and the Caribbean.
