San Diego police arrested 34-year-old Keon Wilson in connection with the murder of 58-year-old Randy Taing
A pursuit and fight with an armed man in a vehicle early Wednesday morning resulted in both closings Sides of Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton, but the freeway reopened fully shortly after 8 a.m.
The northbound lanes were reopened around 6:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol, and the southbound lanes reopened around 8am.
The closings were driven by pursuit of a domestic violence suspect that began Tuesday night in San Diego, authorities said.
The incident began when officers were stopped in City Heights around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday by a naked woman who said she was attacked by her boyfriend, said San Diego Police Officer Tony Martinez.
Police received a description of the man and his vehicle, and about two hours later, officers spotted the vehicle on Interstate 15 near Interstate 8 and tried to overtake it, Martinez said. The driver repeatedly stopped and started again.
At some point, the officers tried to stop the vehicle with a spike strip. The video captured by Fox 5 San Diego showed a white BMW SUV with torn tires.
CHP officials started blocking the lanes of I-5 around 3 a.m. According to a CHP online protocol, the lanes to the north on Las Pulgas Road were initially closed at around 3:05 a.m.
At around 5:45 a.m., the CHP closed both directions of I-5, with traffic heading north on Basilone Road was turned off the highway according to a CHP dispatcher.
The police negotiated with the man who threatened to shoot himself. At around 6:15 a.m., the man in the vehicle shot himself in the head, said Martinez.
At around 6:45 a.m., CHP officials opened the lanes of the motorway heading north. The southbound lanes on Cristianitos Road in San Clemente remained partially closed until 8 a.m. when the traffic warning was lifted.
Update: I-5 south of Cristianitos Rd. All NB lanes were restored Open to traffic (NB junction to Cristianitos closed). Self-service lanes remain closed.
8:16 a.m., May. 26, 2021: This story has been updated with additional information from the California Highway Patrol.
