McNeese State is close to a deal that will see the school move into the Western Athletic Conference and, according to sources, one step closer to the Football Bowl subdivision.
Although the Cowboys are not making an official offer sources have told the American press that the site is in « serious discussion ».
Incarnate Word is also likely to switch to WAC, joining four other Texas schools that left the Southland Conference for the league last year – which only resumed football competition this season.
There were Twitter reports today that sources say may have been a little premature.
McNeese officials have stated from the start that they are looking for a way looking to the top football league. The WAC, which used to be an FBS league but now plays at the FCS level, could move up quickly.
According to the source, McNeese is currently in no talks with another conference, despite recently having talks with troubled representatives of the United States conference.
WAC Commissioner Jeff Hurd said in an email to the American Press that the league is meeting this week to discuss enlargement but does not know the timeframe for any offers. He said the topic of the meeting is expansion.
It has been reported that both Sam Houston state and New Mexico state are leaving the WAC for CUSA, but this has not been confirmed. Currently, both are still active members of the Western Athletic Conference.
This is still a very fluid situation as conferences try to fill places that have been opened in larger leagues thanks to the realignment.
