CM – Interview with Tom Foster, founder of the E-Scooter Company: Volter

Volter is the e-mobility brand for young trendsetters. Our drivers say no to traditional transportation methods and yes to taking care of the world around us.

Currently, the electric mobility market is dominated by brands that don’t represent young millennials and Gen Z that prefer to buy from brands that represent their views and ideals.

We are here to break this mold and provide a home for the stylish and environmentally conscious city dweller. Community and sustainability are at the heart of our business. It is imperative that cities be green, and public transport does not offer the flexibility that your own electric vehicle offers. We are here to offer people a truly environmentally friendly means of transport.

I was on vacation with my wife (soon to be) in 2018 and I remember getting on a rental scooter for the first time. They were so fun and an amazing way to get around a city. I remember telling myself that these fun 2 wheel rental scooters were the future. However when I got home I checked my bank account and soon found that I might as well get a taxi with the cost of renting scooters!

After looking for my own scooter in the UK, I tried to to find a brand that I could trust and look good on. It struck me as silly that design didn’t seem to be the heart of a scooter.

It’s my dream to see fewer cars on the road, but I don’t think the rental scooters will be the answer.

Volter was born from the pandemic. My previous business stopped at the beginning of the first lockdown. I had to wait a very long time for the world to return to normal or to transform into a different market very quickly.

The electric mobility industry has really accelerated because of the pandemic, and that’s really exciting. People are looking for a more sustainable, stress-free, and hygienic way to travel and e-scooters are for you. The industry in the UK is very new and just getting started. We expect strong sales this summer and even stronger sales in 2022 when we expect UK legislation to change to allow e-scooters to be used on the road.

It certainly has not been without its challenges , it was extremely difficult not to be able to travel. We have a truly global supply chain with suppliers in Europe and Asia and so far I haven’t met any of these people face to face. Zoom was certainly our friend.

We did the entire design process in the UK, testing prototypes at every design stage. Let’s just say some of the early ones hit more than they were ready! The global shipping crisis that still plagues us was also extremely difficult. We have waited weeks and often months for products to be shipped, which has really slowed the development of the business.

We’re just getting started! We just launched the S1 and sales have been fantastic, but the future is full of really exciting milestones. We’ll be launching our own helmet and rain jacket later this year. What excites me the most, however, is the S2, which is currently being developed and is being developed as a prototype by our manufacturing partner in Italy.

We can’t say much about it at the moment, but it will be a milestone in the e-scooter industry. Be world-class with fantastic durability, build quality and industry-leading safety features with motorcycle-quality disc brakes and 12-inch tires. This makes it one of the safest e-scooters ever.
