TEHERAN: Iran imposed a week-long lockdown on the capital Tehran and the surrounding region on Monday as the country struggles with a further rise in the coronavirus pandemic, state media reported.
The lockdown – the fifth in the nation to date – begins on Tuesday and lasts until next Monday.
All bazaars, marketplaces and public offices as well as cinemas, fitness studios and restaurants in the province of Tehran and the neighboring province of Alborz will be closed.
Iran reported 25,441 new cases on Monday and 213 deaths last day, bringing the total death toll to 87,374 from more than 3.5 million confirmed cases of the pandemic.
During an earlier surge in cases in April, Iran reported the highest daily number of cases at 25,582.
At that time, the daily death toll rose to around 400, below the dismal record of 486 set last November.
Iranian authorities have recently warned of a new surge fueled by the rapidly spreading Delta variant.
In sanctioned Iran, which has the highest death toll from COVID-19 in the Middle East, have less than 2% of the 84 million population receive both doses, mainly imported Russian and Chinese vaccines.
