Jan 8 (UPI) – Iran on Saturday added its list of sanctions against dozens of former and current US officials and military leaders in retaliation for the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the 51 officials, mainly from the Pentagon and other military establishments, had been placed on the list for « human rights violations and adventurous and terrorist acts ».

January 8 (UPI) – Iran on Saturday added its list of sanctions against dozens of former and current US officials and military leaders in retaliation for the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani.
The Iranian State Department shared in a statement that the 51 officials, mainly from the Pentagon and other military establishments, had been placed on the list for « human rights violations and adventurous and terrorist acts ».
The country said US officials were involved « in the act of terrorism by the United States against the martyr General Ghasem Soleimani and his associates, in the glorification of terrorism and in the violation of fundamental human rights. »
The list, shared by Iranian state media, includes General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, former White House National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.
Iran had previously imposed sanctions on former President Donald Trump, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other top advisors to the Trump administration.
Iran’s mostly symbolic move comes after Soleimani died on the second anniversary of his death – Who was killed on January 3, 2020 in a targeted American drone attack on Baghdad International Airport in Iraq on the orders of Trump. The Trump administration also pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, imposing extensive sanctions on Iranian officials and companies.
Iran’s latest sanctions also come as Iran holds talks with five other countries in Vienna in hopes of lifting US sanctions against the country.
Earlier this week, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian criticized the « cowardly » assassination of Soleimani when his office demanded justice against the United States.
« His name shines brighter than ever as the eternal #hero who is to come Generations inspired. Iran will not rest until the guilty are brought to justice, « a foreign minister spokesman tweeted. « And his mission to end the shameful US presence continues as our region is more alert than ever. »
