CM – « It’s not been a mixed bag for me, I’m happy to have won » – Farrell

IRELAND HEAD COACH Andy Farrell was delighted that his team stayed calm in the second half and beat Japan in Dublin.

The Brave Blossoms proved difficult for Ireland to tie and take the lead changed hands several times in the first half while Farrell’s men also conceded early in the second half, but they showed calm to take the lead back and keep the visitors at bay in the final 39-31 win.

Ireland made during the entire game’s pernicious restart, line-up and defense errors, but scored five tries to claim victory. It could be seen as a mixed effort by his team, but Farrell disagreed with this suggestion.

“It was always a tough old challenge against what I think was an international top team. Any kind of W today has always been great for us. ”

Farrell said he learned a lot about his cadre today in Dublin, especially given the fact that so many key figures are absent from Lions duties, injuries or rest.

« I think the best thing for me is that it would never be perfect, » said Farrell. “I think we certainly saw in the first half that Japan was fit for the friendly, probably through the preparation and the game against the Lions. The opportunities created in this game gave them confidence.

“We were a little rusty and made it worse with mistakes. That made the game difficult for us, it looked like they had more legs than us.

“In the second half we controlled the game with standard and field positions and went to Japan, that was that Most beautiful.

“The hardest thing for a team that has come together is the negativity in their own game, especially against a team like Japan, which can attack like that. We stayed calm and concentrated on the next task, which got us through in the end. «

Farrell was slow to send Gavin Coombes for his test debut, the Munster man only had 10 minutes while Scrum half Craig Casey was taken off the bench in just 90 seconds.

The Irish coach said he was hoping to win Casey sooner but injuries to Jordan Larmour and Chris Farrell meant Ireland would play with only 14 men if there were further injuries in defense.

« Craig has been in a situation where you only have one submarine left and everyone can fall over and you have to hold back there. Hopefully we will assess the situation over the weekend and give the boys more playing time. ”

Next up, Ireland will play the last game of a long season against the USA next weekend in Dublin.

Ireland is expected to it’s making sweeping changes to its team, with Larmour and Farrell having obvious injury concerns. « Jordan had a groin problem, that’s the diagnosis, » said Farrell. « He couldn’t sprint and couldn’t be himself.

» Chris failed his HIA at the time, so he’ll go through the logs. «
