On a day when the Mets couldn’t add a top notch starting pitcher before the trading deadline, their own ace suffered another setback that could keep him away until September.
Jacob deGrom, who has been since July 15th with an elbow infection on the injured list, has another inflammation in his right arm and is being suspended for two weeks.
DeGrom held a 36-pitch bullpen session on Thursday – his second light-side session since the original shutdown – but it will be his last move by mid-August as the Mets will try to claim their place at the top of the NL East without him.
The two-time Cy Young winner set a historically dominant season with an ERA of 1.08 and 15 starts together. The last time he struck was on July 7th.
Prior to the inflammation of the elbow, deGrom had sustained multiple injury scars in other parts of his body this season, although none of them proved to be as severe as this one.
