The Japanese Kei Nishikori has withdrawn from this month’s Australian Open Grand Slam because he is still recovering from a hip injury, said the 32-year-old on Thursday.
Nishikori, who shortly after he was first man from Asia reached a grand final at the 2014 US Open, reached a career high, has been plagued by injuries in recent years and struggled for consistency. « I’ve been fighting with my hip since the end of last year, » said Nishikori , currently at number 47, on Twitter https://twitter.com/keinishikori/status/1479115836686159881. « It’s not yet 100 percent recovered and I’ll have to get out of the Aussie swing.
» That’s very disappointing because the Australian Open feels like my “home” Grand Slam … and I can hardly do it expect to be back next year. «
Nishikori was eliminated in the first round of last year’s Melbourne Park Major. The tournament starts on January 17th.
