Jarryd Hayne was spotted with NRL star Corey Norman as the fallen soccer player tries to enjoy his final days as a free man.
Dragons five-eight Norman posted a photo on Instagram with Hayne and another friend on Tuesday with the title: « Catch ups ».
It will be one of the last times that Hayne will be able to connect with friends for a while. He will be convicted on Wednesday May 6th after he was found guilty in March of sexually assaulting a woman in her Newcastle home.
After three days of deliberation, a jury found Hayne guilty of two sexual intercourse cases without consent. He was found not guilty of aggravating the more serious allegations of aggravated sexual intercourse without consent and of ruthlessly inflicting actual bodily harm.
After a seven-day trial in the Downing Center District Court in Sydney, the jury of seven men and five women found the two-time Dally M winner and ex-NFL convert guilty.
After the crash of the ex-star from Parramatta and Gold Coast, he faces a maximum of 14 years in prison. After his guilty verdict, Judge Syme said to him: « A prison sentence is inevitable. »
« I would rather go to jail because I know I was telling the truth than being a free man who lives a lie, » he said at the time, supported by Ms. Amellia Bonnici.
« I’ve shown it from the start. It’s unfortunate, it’s disappointing. But at the end of the day they made the decision. I respect that and I’ll be back on May 6th. »
Hayne was given bail and last month was seen hanging out with his family on a beach on the NSW Central Coast.
« He was relaxed and smiling and throwing a ball with a buddy and kid, » an observer told The Australian. « He spent hours on the beach and in the water. You’d never know, if you looked at him, that these might be his last days of freedom. »
Hayne pleaded not guilty and denied sexually assaulting the then 26-year-old woman in her home in Fletcher on the outskirts of Newcastle in September 2018.
During her retrial evidence, repeated from Haynes’ first trial, the woman said she refused to consent to sex because the former NSW Origin defense attorney kept a taxi waiting outside.
The couple had communicated on social media for several weeks prior to the incident, but did not meet in person before the evening of September 30th – the same night as the grand NRL final.
Hayne had been to a two-day buck party in Newcastle and had arranged to pay a taxi driver $ 550 to take him back to Sydney, where he had to attend an event in Alexandria at midnight.
The woman said when she heard the taxi beeping outside her bedroom window, she decided that there was « no way » she would consent to the sex.
Hayne was assisted during his legal exam by Mrs. Bonnici, whom he married after a hurricane.
The couple married in front of about 50 family members and friends in January after hiding most of the details of the occasion to avoid prying eyes.
« We met on January 26th five years ago. Thank god we took care of it and realized that we wanted to be, » wrote Hayne on Instagram after tying the knot.
« Thank you to our family & friends who were there yesterday. We had an amazing day with all of you.
The wedding took place just a month after Hayne announced on social media his engagement to Bonnici, with whom he has a four-year-old daughter, Beliviah Ivy.
