CM – Joaquin Niemann and his caddy run for the fastest lap ever played in East Lake

Joaquin Niemann completed the fastest Tour lap ever at East Lake and may or may not have got into trouble after his lap.

ATLANTA – Andy Pazder, the tournament and competition director of the PGA Tour, was waiting for Joaquin Niemann in the points area after his 72nd finals.

« Come here, we have to talk, » said Pazder to Niemann. “Listen, Joaquin, as a professional you disregarded the game, you disregarded the Tour Championship. That’s not how pros act, and [Caddy Gary Matthews] you’ve been out here a long time and you should know that, and there’s a $ 10,000 fine here. «

Niemann just had the fastest lap on the tour, ever played at East Lake was completed in an impressive hour and 53 minutes, which was five minutes faster than it took Kevin Na to play as a single player in the 2016 Tour Championship.

Niemann, who on Saturday after the Withdrawal from Brooks Koepka had to play alone with an injured wrist, was aware of Na’s record before teeing off, but it wasn’t until he made the turn in a little over an hour that he took the record.

« I thought me, I’ll just rush it and try to break the record. It was pretty good, the second nine, ”said Niemann, who overtook the week by 4 and finished 29 of 29 players.

Although he said the fast pace probably didn’t help his game, Niemann admitted that it was much more difficult for Matthews, who was preparing for the day’s pace by essentially emptying Niemann’s pocket.

« He had three golf balls. He didn’t have the usual nine. He didn’t have a rain cover. He didn’t have any small instruments that we had. He only had one glove, five T-shirts, ”laughed Matthews. « It was really cool. »

The unofficial record for the fastest tour race is held by Wesley Bryan, who finished his last run at the 2017 BMW Championship in Conway Farms near Chicago in one hour and 29 minutes.
