CM – Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross win the best original score: Second Oscar triumph for Nine Inch Nails Duo

The duo, who had already won for “The Social Network” in 2011, this time won the prize for “Soul” together with Jon Batiste.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won their second Oscar on Sunday night, just over a decade after their first win for « The Social Network ». Together with Jon Batiste, the long-time music partners took statues home for the best original score for their joint work on the Pixar film « Soul ».

« Soul » is one of the few films with a music-related protagonist that has been in this category since  » The Red Violin « from 1999 and only joined » La La Land « during this time. So it’s fitting that the team behind it has the impressive musical pedigree that goes with it. Batiste has been the band leader for « The Late Show with Stephen Colbert » since its premiere in 2015. During this time he also released several studio and live albums, including « WE ARE » from last month. He was also nominated in two categories at last month’s Grammy Awards.

Ross has worked on a number of TV projects over the past few years, most recently as a composer for the AMC series Dispatches from Elsewhere. He and Reznor teamed up for the Emmy Award for the HBO Limited series « Watchmen ». Both were also nominated for the score for « Mank, » one of the film’s 10 nominations on Sunday night. Reznor and Ross are currently the main members of the band Nine Inch Nails.

The couple’s 2011 win for « The Social Network » (like « Mank », a David Fincher film) was far from the first for a score where the sound is based on a mostly electronic feel. But due to its sparse melodies (as can also be found in Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score for “Joker”) and the mixture of artistic influences that can be found in her mainstream work (as in Ludwig Göransson and his score “Black Panther” the Fall war), the music from This Film is associated not only with « Soul » but also with the two winners in the category.

« Soul » was faced with an impressive list of contenders for the best original score. Emile Mosseri’s « Minari » music (who also landed one of the most memorable scores of 2020 in the world of television) became part of that film’s strong last-minute momentum within the Oscar season. Like Thomas Newman last year, James Newton Howard and Terence Blanchard are multiple nominees with acclaimed careers whose time to take home Oscar gold has to wait a little longer.

The award is the first since 1987 (David Byrne, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cong Su for “The Last Emperor”) that the category winner was a score credited to more than two composers.
