Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia paid tribute to the monument to Rani Laxmibai on what is likely the first visit by a member of the former Gwalior royal family.
But Congress leaders said this was not enough to admit the « sin » of Mr. Scindia’s ancestors atoning for those who did not support the legendary Rani during the 1857 rebellion; and party workers even tried to « clean up » the memorial on Tuesday.
Laxmibai, one of the most famous leaders of the rebellion, was killed in combat with British troops in Gwalior on June 18, 1858.
The MLA Laxman Congress Singh greeted Mr. Scindia and tweeted that « Jyotiraditya Scindia’s bow to the statue of Rani of Jhansi is a brave move. » Madhya Pradesh BJP spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi said Rani Laxmibai was a symbol of sacrifice and by paying homage to her memorial, Mr. Scindia « honored the bravery of those who gave their lives for the country. » But the high-ranking chairman of the State Congress, KK Mishra, said Mr. Scindia could not atone for his family history by doing this.
It is a « known fact that the Scindias do not support Rani Laxmibai’s rebellion against the British « , he claimed.
» The sin committed in 1857 cannot be washed away by Jyotiraditya Scindia’s visit to the warrior queen monument in 2021, « said the Congress Chairman.
On Sunday, Mr. Scindia visited in Accompanied by Madhya Pradesh Energy Minister Pradyumna Singh Tomar the Samadhi of Laxmibai in the Phool Bagh area when he returned from a program.
The Civil Aviation Minister, who resigned from Congress in 2020 and joined the BJP, paid flowers and bowed to the Queen von Jhansi.
MP Congress spokesman Narendra Singh Saluja mocked Mr Scindia, saying, « Which is what the whole BJP is forcing him to do after joining the Saffron Party is to get a post and a chair. » Former BJP State Minister Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya and followers of Rani Laxmibai could now purify samadhi with Ganga Jal (water from the Ganges, which is considered sacred), he added.
Mr. Pawaiya was once the critic of Mr. Scindia. But after joining the BJP, Mr. Scindia paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Pawaiya’s Gwalior residence.
On Tuesday, a group of Congress workers, including women, went to the memorial with Ganga Jal and flowers.
« You were prevented from entering the site as it was getting crowded. One of them was allowed to offer flowers in the samadhi, but no cleaning took place, « said the additional superintendent of the police Satendra Singh Tomar.
Ruchi Gupta, the president of the women’s cell of the Congress, said by only bowing to the samadhi, that the defamation of the reputation of the Scindia clan would not go away, and therefore party workers cleaned the memorial with Ganga Jal.
« The police prevented us from entering the samadhi and also locked the gate, but later allowed they offer us flowers, « said Siddharth Rajawat, another spokesman for the state congress.
Mr Scindia should first apologize to the people of the country, since his ancestors sided with the British in 1857 instead of supporting Rani Laxmibai, which delayed independence for nearly 100 years, he said.
