Tamim Iqbal’s half-century counterattack cleared Bangladesh of early jitter in its second inning and ensured that Sunday’s first Test against Sri Lanka ended in a draw at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.

With the draw Bangladesh also recorded the first points in the Test World Championship and received 20 points for the draw.

Tamim remained unbeaten on 74, while skipper Mominul Haque on the other end failed to score a strict 23 when Bangladesh made 100 in his second inning -2.

Heavy rains that started during the tea break did not allow any surpluses in the final session, and Bangladesh finished the process to Sri Lanka with seven runs in the second innings.

Previously, Sri Lanka had declared his first innings on 648-8 during lunch with Bangladeshi bowlers, led by Taskin Ahmed, who eventually ended the drought on day four and five on the morning The double centurion Dimuth Karunaratne and the centurion Dhananjaya de Silva finally gave way to the Bangladeshi bowlers, who both fell to Taskin after 244 and 166 points respectively.

Taskin, who completed his first test in over three years , finished 3-112 while Taijul took two wickets.

Sri Lanka resumed the game of the day with 512-3, 29 runs behind Bangladesh. It was hoping to get some quick runs in the morning and test the batters in Bangladesh later in the day.

That attacking mindset was the overthrow of both batsmen overnight as Dhananjaya was the first batsman to walk when he hit a ball pulled into its stumps, ending the huge 345 run stand between him and Karunaratne, the largest of all wickets in Tests between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Karunaratne also followed him into the locker room on Taskin’s next lap when he tried to drag the ball over Midwicket to hit Nazmul Hossain Shanto directly.

Pathum Nissanka (12) and Niroshan Dickwella (31) were next, with the former taking a ball from Ebadot Hossain straight to wicketkeeper Liton Das pushed, while the latter fell victim to a misunderstanding with his partner and ran out.

Wanindu Hasaranga and Suranga Lakmal then made 43 and 22 respectively to improve the lead over 100, and the Sri Lankan camp decided that this was enough to challenge the visiting batsmen and declared their innings during the lunch hour.

The Bangladeshi batsman only had to reasonably beat a session in a barren field on day five to get the sting out of the competition, but Saif Hassan did , who got out for a duck in the first innings, and Nazmul, who hit his first Test century in the previous innings, fell to Suranga Lakmal for 1 and 0 to stutter the hosts 27-2.

But Tamim came Bangladesh counterattacked innings, similar to its first inning exploits, where he attacked the bowlers in Sri Lanka and beat four and six of them to put pressure on the rest of the batsmen.

Tamim turned 50 from just 56 balls, 40 runs from four and six, while Mominul hit one of 30 balls on the other end.

Tamim survived a tight call when he hit on the 29th when he violently off-spin -Dhananjaya delivery hit, but the ball bounced off the silly point fielder and was wrapped up by wicketkeeper Dickwella.

The referees on the field were unsure and sent the decision to the third referee with a soft signal. After careful examination, however, the third referee realized that the ball was touching the ground before hitting the outfield player’s shoes.

Mominul also survived a referral from the same bowler when the third referee confirmed that the referee was on the Feld failed to call for a leg before the wicket roll call.

Previously, Nazmul and Mominul made 163 and 127, while Tamim and Liton did 90 and 50 to help the Tigers close 541-7 in their first innings after deciding to strike first.

After Bangladesh finally declared their innings after almost seven sessions, the Sri Lankan batters showed a similar dominance.

Sri Lanka went 190-3 in fourth Day and ended the day 512-3, with Karunaratne and Dhananjaya unbeaten at 234 and 154 respectively.

It was almost certain that the game would end in a draw after both teams had their first innings in the first four days of AD Unless something drastic happened on the last day that ultimately didn’t happen.
