CM – Kevin Porter Jr. left the arena at halftime after an altercation with the coach

For the second time in the last 12 months, Porter was caught in an ugly confrontation with a figure of authority that escalated to objects being thrown.

On Saturday night, the three-year-old NBA veteran reportedly made an exception when Houston Rockets assistant coach John Lucas called him halfway through the team’s 124-111 loss to the Denver Nuggets. Porter reportedly threw something and had to be separated from Lucas before storming out of the arena and driving home halfway through the competition.

If that sounds familiar, a similar outbreak led the Cleveland Cavaliers to trade porters to Houston last season for a top 55 protected second-round pick.

That incident happened last January when Porter freaked out after the Cavs gave the Taurean Prince his locker and transported him through the reserves. Porter got into a heated argument with Cavaliers General Manager Koby Altman, throwing food at him and shouting about « modern slavery, » sources told Spencer Davies of BasketballNews at the time.

The Cavaliers banned Porter from the facility and immediately began buying him in the league. The Rockets were ready to give the talented 20-year-old a flight in hopes that after a change of scenery he would be successful.

However, Porter has also had a number of alarming extrajudicial incidents in recent years. In August 2020, he was accused of slapping a woman in the face. In November 2020, Porter was arrested after a car accident because officers found a loaded gun and marijuana in his vehicle, but the charges were later dropped.

It remains to be seen how the Rockets will deal with this situation. Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN reports that « a possible discipline, if any, has yet to be determined for Porter ».

Porter had played well for the Rockets last season, averaging 16.6 points, 6.3 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.9 threes per game. This year he delivers 13.0 points, 5.9 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 threes and 1.3 steals per contest.
