As part of a dizzying track in which the Kings will play four games in five nights, they traveled from Arizona to San Jose to face the Sharks on Tuesday night.
After a 2-1 loss to the Arizona Coyotes and rookie winger Dylan Guenther in their preseason opener, the Kings had plans to completely revamp their roster to include 18 new skaters. Core veterans such as Dustin Brown, Drew Doughty and Anze Kopitar will probably not be among them, as will newcomers such as Viktor Arvidsson, Phillip Danault or Alex Edler, according to King’s coach Todd McLellan on Sunday.
Defender Sean Walker scored the Kings only goal on Monday in Arizona. Arthur Kaliyev, an attacking budding winger, and Cade McNelly, an under-contracted Western Hockey League guest, received assists. McNelly, a defender known for his confrontational approach, also battled veteran winger Andrew Ladd on Monday.
« Wet feet have been a great experience for some very young players and I thought the goalkeepers played well, » Kings coach Todd McLellan told reporters about the game on Monday. « Apart from the result, there isn’t much to complain about. »
San Jose played split squad games on Sunday, with one group losing 6-3 to the Ducks and 4-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights.
McLellan trained San Jose for seven years from 2008 to 2015, and several Sharks remain from his tenure. These include center Logan Couture, defender Brent Burns, striker Tomas Hertl and defender Marc-Edouard Vlasic.
The Sharks had a relatively quiet offseason in terms of transactions. Above all, they bought the contract of former Kings goalkeeper Martin Jones. They opted for Adin Hill, which they acquired from Arizona, and James Reimer, who is entering his second assignment with the Sharks, online.

Winger Evander Kane has been the focus of considerable controversy this off-season. A league investigation found that his wife’s claims that he gambled away his own games are unfounded, but a number of debts, questionable behavior and potential dressing room cracks continue to haunt the Sharks’ top performers on goals, assists and points last season.
