CM – Lions captain extends Brisbane stay ahead of gabba blockbusters

Last season’s drought win against Richmond will mean little to the Brisbane Lions if they don’t repeat the result against the Tigers at Gabba on Friday night.

The Lions defeated the Tigers for the first time in 11 years in last season’s finals series.

And while Richmond bounced back to capture its third flag in four years, the Lions’ belief in their ability to win a Premier League was reinforced with their 15-point victory over the best team of the competition in October.

« They’ve proven they’ve been the best team in four or five years and the fact that we beat them once should give us some confidence. » Lions skipper Dayne Zorko said.

« But we have to be consistent, especially when you play these kind of teams.

» We want to be just like them, and it gives us a great opportunity (on Friday) to go out and do that.

« We did it once (beat Richmond) – I don’t know if it ever proves anything, » said Fagan.

« We’ll try to do this more than once to be able to. That is the goal. «

Zorko will have great faith in the game after the Lions announced on Thursday that he had signed a one-year contract extension

» Every single game I play for the Lions is something Special to me, and that’s exactly what this expansion means to me, the chance to go outside with my friends and play more games for this great club, « said Zorko, who has made 194 AFL appearances in a career in Brisbane that 2012 started.

32-year-old Zorko was overlooked in four national drafts before finally getting a chance with the Lions.

« I may not have had the traditional entry into the AFL, but the opportunity to do this I wouldn’t trade a large group of players to the park every week for anything, « he said.

» I knew I would stay here forever. We are sure to build something special here and I want to go on for as long as possible ei n be part of it. «

Fagan said the signing of Zorko – a four-time Merrett-Murray medalist and an All-Australian selection from 2017 – would » cause quite a stir. «

» He was one of the leading midfielders in the competition and received the associated recognition and award.

« We asked him to change his role to increase our midfield depth and he never questioned the decision, but accepted it for the good of the team.

« This type of leadership inspires players and while he may not get the possession he once had, you can always count on him to deliver the spark when we need it and the pressure he puts on the standard and is the cornerstone of our game. « ‘
