2. T20I report: Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan led Bangladesh to a 2-0 lead over Australia in the Twenty20 series with an emphatic five-wicket win on Wednesday.
On the hunt for 122 to win, Bangladesh relied on an uninterrupted 56-run-six-wicket partnership between Afif, who scored 37, and Nurul, who made 22, to reach their goal with eight balls remaining in Dhaka.
Shakib Al Hasan made 26, but Bangladesh was in trouble 67-5 in the 12th round when Mahedi Hasan left, displacing Adam Zampa for 23.
Pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman took three wickets to Australia despite 45 from Mitchell Marsh to 121-7, who scored the same number of points in his team’s opening defeat in the five-game series on Tuesday.
« It’s very gratifying to see Afif and ‘Sohan’ stand up and see us through You have shown maturity, « said skipper Mahmudullah Riyad after the victory.
« Our bowlers did a very good job keeping them down to 120. But Shakib was very important in bowling and hitting, which shows how important he is to the team. «
Bangladesh, which had their first T20 win against Australia in the previous game, has two games for the first time in all formats won against his opponent in a row.
Pace Bowler Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc struck early to remove openers Soumya Sarkar for zero and Mohammad Naim for nine.
Shakib brought the hosts in with his 17-ball -Tap and a partnership of 37 back for the third wicket with Mahedi.
The mid-paced bowler Andrew Tye bowled Shakib and Mahmudullah pulled the ball from left spinner Ashton Agar on his stump when Bangladesh slipped.
But the 21-year-old Afif showed serenity to thwart the opposing bowling along with Hasan, a wicketkeeper batsman, and bring the team home.
Previously, the tourists who lost the opener broke after they set out on their hunt 131 for 108 were knocked out of the ground, after Marsh’s wicket went from 99-3 to 106-7.
Marsh bet 57 for the third wicket with Moises Henriques, who scored 30 after the departure of the two opening games.
Marsh got caught behind the fast bowler Shoriful Islam before Mustafizur struck twice on consecutive deliveries to send back Skipper Matthew Wade for four and Agar for zero.
« Would have got high 130s or 140s which would have been a profit point on this stretch « said Wade.
» The bowlers on both teams did really well. Bowling isn’t a problem for us, we have to clean up the racket. «
The third T20 will take place on Friday, with all games played in the same place.
