July 2 (Reuters) – Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama tested positive for COVID-19 and withdrew from this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, the PGA Tour announced on Friday.

The Japanese number 18 in the world rankings played on Thursday with the six-time major champion Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler the opening round and shot a straight par 70 at the Detroit Golf Club, which left him seven strokes behind the leader.

Matsuyama, who in April became the first Japanese to play golf Major won, is considered a contender to ignite the cauldron at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games on July 23, and is expected to compete in the Olympic golf competitions from July 29.
