16 computer information systems faculties from universities in Arizona and Utah and several community colleges in Arizona are taking advantage of free training on Amazon Web Services Cloud Foundations offered by Dennis Kibbe, CIS faculty at Mesa Community College.
“There are many who are familiar with computer networks and not many who know how to work for the cloud. This became clear when the two opening classes for students were filled last fall during the pandemic, ”Kibbe said in the press release. “We realized that as the only system in the state with curriculum for higher education, we can do the best to improve the knowledge base by helping our colleagues (computer information systems). This led to the development of a condensed AWS Cloud Foundations course for other CIS instructors. “
Mr. Kibbe and Andrea Schauer, a colleague from Glendale Community College, developed the foundation curriculum based on teaching materials provided by AWS. It is one of four eight-week for-credit courses that prepare students to successfully earn AWS certifications and increase the number of cloud architects in Arizona. MCC is the only college in the state that offers AWS courses for credits. GCC offers the courses in the summer and fall semesters.
John Bjerke, AWS Academy’s program manager, recognizes the importance of educating educators to improve access to cloud computing education in colleges. In October 2020, the AWS Academy partnered with the Arizona Commerce Authority to announce a commitment to improve access to cloud computing education in schools across Arizona. The initiative aims to train and certify 5,000 students for entry-level cloud computing careers by June 2022, with continued long-term investment in technical skills training for Arizonans.
