JOHNS CREEK, Georgia – After a 5 over 77 on Thursday, Michelle Wie West shot 3 under par 69 on Friday to cut the number in the KMPG Women’s PGA Championship.
« He told me to Get my head out of my ass so I did, « Wie West said. « I got my head out of my ass and played a little golf today. »
Two mud balls on the first two holes made Wie West rattle, but she managed a birdie on the second par-5. She went on to make four birdies in the first seven holes.
« This was the first time in a long time that I felt that every hole looked like a birdie hole, » Wie West said made her fifth and final birdie on par-4 10.
As the new mom to her little girl Makenna, there are moments in the process when Wie West is across the country for the first time without her daughter.
« The guilt is real, » she said. « You go out there and how am I really supposed to be that far away from her here? » I heard this kind of baby babble at 18 and felt myself tearing up, but I did FaceTime with her yesterday. She’s always smiling and having a lot of fun and is just spoiled by her grandparents. ”
In her last tournaments Wie West opened with solid Thursday rounds but couldn’t keep the momentum to make the cut. At the ANA Inspiration she shot a 2-under 70 followed by a 7-over 79. The next week, Wie West carded rounds of 70-77 at the Hugel-Air Premia LA Open and shot at the US Open at the Olympic Club Rounds 74-80 and missed the cut in all three events.
Like West, she had her breakthrough at the LPGA Mediheal where she shot rounds of 73-75 to make the cut and followed by sub-par rounds of 69- 71.
« It really helped make the cut at Mediheal, » she said. « I felt like I was putting together really solid laps on Thursday and it kind of blew up on Friday. I felt like Merced was the first week I really stuck together and really fought my way through and made the cut, and that really helped. I’m very proud of myself for sticking out [today] and hopefully I can shoot low this weekend. «

Michelle Wie West wanted to do something for the LPGA. She didn’t think her idea would be that successful.
