CAIRO – The Libyan Coast Guard tweeted Monday it rescued 140 migrants from a struggling wooden boat attempting to reach the European Union coast and found 15 bodies on board. In a short video, the bodies are seen on the deck of the boat and people are pulling some of them out of two portholes. The tweet and video were posted on the Libya Observer website. The first message of the shipwreck was Alarm Phone, followed by confirmation from UNCHR. 15 people were recovered when two boats arrived at the Tripoli naval base tonight, ”UNHCR Libya tweeted, quoting different numbers than those of the Libyan Coast Guard. Tragic loss of life, « UNHCR tweeted along with two photos of migrants on board and next to a patrol boat at night in Tripoli route » – which from Libya to Italy – 474 people have died and 689 have been missing this year, compared with 381 dead and 597 missing for all of 2020. As of October 9, a total of 26,314 migrants were brought back to Libya, IOM said, recalling that there were 11,891 in the 12 months of last year.
