TORONTO –
More than half of Canada’s population has been vaccinated with at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to CTVNews.cas vaccine tracker.

On Saturday morning, the percentage of the Canadian population who received at least one dose of vaccine dropped over 50 percent after New Brunswick reported an additional 11,383 initial doses.

The percentage of fully vaccinated â ???? what does it mean that they received two doses? is just over 4 percent.

Dr. Michael Silverman, chief of infectious diseases at the London Health Sciences Center and St. Joseph’s Health Care London in London, Ontario, said Canada was a major milestone in getting 50 percent on first doses.

« It’s exciting, » he told the CTV News Channel on Saturday. Everyone can dance a little at home, but we don’t want everyone to dance together just yet. It means that we are really on the way to getting back to normal. “????

On Friday, Canada outperformed the US in the number of first doses given per capita. However, the US has a far higher percentage of the population fully vaccinated with two doses.

By Saturday afternoon, 47 percent of Americans had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 37 percent had received two shots.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average daily pace of COVID-19 vaccinations is down nearly 50 percent from the April peak.

Despite the slowdown in vaccinations, the US has given fully vaccinated residents the green light to resume many indoor activities without a mask or physical distancing.

Although our first dose numbers are very impressive and are growing rapidly, our [number] of fully vaccinated patients is still only 4 percent so we are unable to roll out the CDC on a widespread basis in the US, which is really good for people is who had two cans ???? he said.

Silverman urged Canadians to continue wearing masks, distance themselves physically, and avoid indoor gatherings even as more people are vaccinated.

« We need to increase our vaccination rates as high as possible to get herd immunity so people can go back to normal, » he said.

While Canada is currently lagging behind the US and other countries in second-dose administration, Dr. Howard Njoo, the country’s deputy chief public health officer, said Canadians could get these second shots sooner than expected.

« Canada doesn’t have a one-dose strategy, we’ve always had a two-dose strategy, » he said during a press conference on Thursday. « The problem is lengthening the dose interval between the first and second dose. So I think that obviously more doses are coming into the country very quickly. We are well on the way to offering this second dose. » ???

On Friday, Njoo said vaccinations have doubled in the past five weeks and daily COVID-19 cases have fallen by 25 percent in the past seven days. He added that hospital stays, deaths and ICUs remain high, but those numbers are also falling.

While the surge in vaccinations is cause for celebration, federal and provincial officials have spent much of the last week asking Canadians to stay on public health a little longer, especially when the long Victoria Day weekend is in full swing Is in progress.

« Our actions this long weekend couldn’t be more important, » said Njoo. « COVID-19 resurrections have haunted social gatherings over the past holidays and long weekends. »

« Given all the important work we still have to do, this weekend is not the time to let go of our watch. »

Globally, the small British overseas territory of Gibraltor remains the world leader in vaccinations per capita. According to CTVNews.ca’s vaccine tracker, 107 percent of the population is fully vaccinated.

This story has been corrected to show Canada crossed the 50 percent mark for first doses when New Brunswick reported its vaccine numbers.
