CM – MotoGP: Franco Morbidelli has knee surgery

Franco Morbidelli will have an operation on his left knee tomorrow (Friday 25 June) after he was banned from the Dutch TT in Assen.

Franco Morbidelli will have an operation on his left knee tomorrow (Friday 25 June) after worsening an existing injury in a training incident.

The Petronas Yamaha rider first revealed the problem, which was originally caused by a Training accident at the VR46 ranch after falling during a training bike swap at the Catalan Grand Prix. The Italian’s knee buckled when he jumped off his Yamaha M1. This recent incident appears to be causing further damage and surgery is now Morbidelli’s best option.

A statement released tonight by the Petronas Yamaha team revealed, « Professor Maurilo Marcacci and his team will step in to resolve the meniscus and meniscus problem the anterior cruciate ligament of Franco’s left knee. «

» As many of you know, I won’t be riding in Assen this weekend after I had another painful knee slip episode in training! I’ll be my team, my bike and miss you all, but I’m sure it won’t take me too long! Thank you all for the wonderful news! «

Morbidelli’s injury comes aboard the 2019 A-Spec after a difficult start to the 2021 season M1 Yamaha.

World Superbike rider Garrett Gerloff will replace Morbidelli at the Dutch TT this weekend in Assen. It’s Gerloff’s full MotoGP debut, having previously substituted for Valentino Rossi on the opening day of the 2020 Valencia GP. However, Rossi returned after passing a Covid test the next morning.

It is the first time since 2016 when the late Nicky Hayden replaced the injured Dani Pedrosa at Repsol Honda for the Australian GP that an American Rider starts a MotoGP race.

Another update regarding Morbidelli’s condition will be made after the operation. After the campaign this weekend, there will be a five-week summer break, the Styrian Grand Prix will not take place until August 8th.
