Two-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza fought her way past former world number one Victoria Azarenka to reach the fourth round of the US Open.
The ninth seed Muguruza, who was in Flushing Meadows had never got past the fourth round, won with 6-4 3-6 6-2.
The twelfth seeded Simona Halep also reached the fourth round with a three-set win against the Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina.
During the fourth seeded Karolina Pliskova needed a tie-break in the third set to beat Amanda Anisimova in round two.
The 29-year-old Czech survived an early exit with 7: 5, 6: 7 (5: 7), 7: 6 (9 : 7) and will meet the Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic in round three.
In the next round the 29-year-old will meet either the fifth seeded Elina Svitolina from Ukraine or the Russian Daria Kasatkina.
