CM – Najmul, Mahmudul 1950s fuel Bangladesh’s strong response against New Zealand

WELLINGTON: Mahmudul Hasan and Najmul Hossain struck half centuries to reinforce Bangladesh’s strong response to New Zealand’s first innings totaling 328 in the opening test at Mount Maunganui on Sunday.

The touring team finished day two strong 175-2, 153 back but hoped to take a lead in the first inning after their bowlers did an excellent job in the morning session to keep New Zealand below 350.

Mahmudul, only completing his second Test , struck on a feisty 70 with skipper Mominul Haque to eight at the other end of the Bay Oval.

Previously, New Zealand had resumed at 258-5 and added 70 runs in the morning session before making its final five wickets three overs before Lunch break lost.

Overnight batsman Henry Nicholls hit 12 lines in his 75 and was the last New Zealand wicket to fall.

Bangladesh got off to a good start when Shadman Islam and Mahmudul added 43 runs for the opening booth.

Neil Wagner broke the booth after catching Shadman, who made 22, at his own bowling, but Mahmudul and Najmul frustrated the host with a century booth. </ Both batsmen took time to get their eyes off and had their moments of discomfort, but they carried on.

« We’ve been missing top-notch partnerships lately. It’ll give us a lot of confidence, and there’s a lot of cricket in the game. «

Najmul, who made 64, brought up his fiftieth weirdo, Rachin Ravindra, for a six before Wagner put him in the gutter.

» I think we really tried. We just couldn’t string it together and build enough pressure on both sides. «
