CM – Navy ship completes safety study near Colombo port

INS Sarvekshak, described as a state-of-the-art hydrographic survey vessel, was dispatched by the Navy on June 23 to a formal request from the Sri Lankan government to conduct a joint safety study with the Sri Lankan Navy and National Aquatic Agency for Resource research and development in the waters near and along important shipping routes in front of the port of Colombo.

On Friday, the High Commissioner of India, Gopal Baglay, presented the  » measuring sheet  » to Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda in a solemn ceremony of the survey.

The  » fairsheet  » identified 54 underwater debris and one shipwreck. The survey data will be used to advise seafarers and fishermen as well as salvage workers on removing debris, reported the online news portal Colombo Page.

INS Sarvekshak has surveyed 807 miles of sea using side-scan sonar technology, built-in sensors and two survey boats, the news website said. The ship’s crew worked day and night to process the data to meet the urgent need.

The welcoming ceremony was attended by the Minister of State for Fisheries Kanchana Wijesekara, the Secretary of the Fisheries Ministry RM Rathnayaka and the Chairman of Sri Lankan Port Control, Captain Nihal Keppetipola, part.

The cargo ship MS X-Press Pearl was carrying 1,486 containers of chemicals and cargo when it went up in flames near the port of Colombo on May 21. The Sri Lankan Navy, Air Force and Indian Coast Guard put out the fire together in a day-long operation.

In addition to the 325 tons of fuel in the tanks, the ship was loaded with 25 tons of dangerous nitric acid.
