Chris Paul is 36 years old. He’s still playing at a high level, but a gnawing shoulder injury puts his future – especially in relation to his contract – into question.
Paul has a $ 44.4 million player option that he’ll end up with Season at the Phoenix Suns. However, according to a new report, he may decline the option in the face of a longer contract.
NBA insider Eric Pincus reports that Paul will “decline” his $ 44.4 million player option in the hopes that he can get a longer deal valued at more than $ 100 million. Pincus noted that Paul’s recent gnawing shoulder injury could lead him to choose the player option instead.
In the scenario, Paul declines the option and relies on himself, his days at the Phoenix Suns may be numbered. Phoenix is already entering a pivotal off-season with both DeAndre Ayton and Mikal Bridges eligible for extra time.
« [Chris] Paul has a $ 44.4 million player option which he says is multiple sources wants to decline in the hope of getting a new multi-year contract (perhaps in the range of $ 100 million over three seasons), ”Pincus writes of Bleacher Report. “It is unclear whether his recent shoulder injury will change his plans. Gordon Hayward, who struggled with more severe injuries than Paul, made a similar decision last off-season, giving up his senior year with the Boston Celtics to sign a four-year $ 120 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets. p> What Chris Paul and possibly the Phoenix Suns decide will likely depend on how the rest of the postseason turns out.
The Suns are only one game away from eliminating the Los Angeles Lakers from the playoffs. Paul is a massive reason for this. In games where he’s been healthy, Paul has absolutely shredded the Lakers’ long but slow defense.
If Paul thinks he can win a championship with Phoenix, he’ll likely find a way to stay, be it through player option or a final long-term contract.
