The NCIS: Los Angeles team will look radically different this fall, with two longtime characters departing in the season 12 finale of the CBS high-octane drama.

During the season end, Eric Beale (played von Barrett Foa), the former tech operator of the team that became the aspiring tech titan, announced to his partner, intelligence analyst Nell Jones (Renée Felice Smith), that he had received funding for the international headquarters from his Kaleidoscope-based company Technology company based in… Tokyo. Additionally, he had successfully set his board to Nell as his number 1 – and by the end of the episode, Nell decided not to sign up as the « new Hetty » / Operations Manager and instead join Eric on the adventure. And as part of an atypically shiny-happy NCIS: LA finale montage, the two literally rode off into the sunset (in Eric’s ridiculously lavish new sports car).

Foa has been with NCIS: LA since the pilot and became mid-season promoted to the regular series. In the eleventh season, the stage vet took a brief leave of absence for another career opportunity, and in the twelfth season he / Eric performed intermittently.

Smith joined the cast early in the second season and was like Foa not featured in a series of episodes in season 11 and 12.

Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill only spoke to TVLine about the decision to write the two characters in one fell swoop.

» Both Renée and Barrett have been on the show a long time and both are very ambitious people who have projects they want to do themselves – and we gave them time to do that, « said Gemmill. « It seemed like a natural time to let go of them and do some other things and give [their characters] a happy, hopefully ending ending. »

However, this is not necessarily the ending for either Eric or Nell. « There’s a little void in there when Nell says she’ll be alone in Tokyo with Eric, and she gives it » six weeks « before she gets back, » noted Gemmill. “So we’ll see what happens.”

Viewers are perhaps most surprised that Nell turned down MIA Hetty’s job and left the position pretty much vacant in Season 13.

“This Seemed like a good time [to write them down] because you probably expected Nell to take Hetty’s job, which she is groomed for, « Gemmill said. « But in a way, it’s a good thing to have a bit of unpredictability for the show. That keeps it fresh and honest. But also, like I said, we stay in gaps so we can bring people back. »

Next Monday at TVLine: Our exclusive exit interviews with Foa and Smith, who reflect on their more than ten year runs – and bring light to this close shave on the screen! And who will now be Operations Manager?
