Just as the cast and crew of NCIS: New Orleans were filming episode 13 of the current season in February, the team received some terrible news: CBS had decided that season 7 would be the last for the crime series.
« It was painful, » co-executive producer Jan Nash told TV Insider. « But it was a blessing to have enough time to make adjustments and a finale that feels very true to New Orleans. » According to Scott himself, the departure from the series was a pretty unique one given the ongoing pandemic Experience. « The final installment in a seven-year series has all kinds of light, » he told the outlet. « People were making speeches, clinking their elbows. Although CBS executives made her decision For not having explicitly stated that they were pulling the plug, the cancellation was likely due to two factors – declining ratings for NCIS: New Orleans and the upcoming NCIS: Hawaii project.

Last year the show averaged 6.3 million, while the first season of NCIS: New Orleans averaged 15.3 million. Meanwhile, around 9.5 million are still set on the flagship NCIS, which was renewed by CBS for a 19th season. Finally, there’s NCIS: Los Angeles, which draws an average of 5.6 million viewers a week (even in Season 12).
Additionally, CBS seems to be putting its resources and attention on a new NCIS franchise called NCIS: Hawaii which will air this 2021-22 broadcast season. Both Jan and Chris Silber, currently working on NCIS: New Orleans, will be executive producers and writers on the new series, according to Variety. Meanwhile, Vanessa Lachey becomes the main character Jane Tennant.
Scott looks forward to spending more time with his family, including a grandson along the way. Looking back on his time, he told TV Insider, « I’m grateful for the spirit of Pride, his love for New Orleans and the people. The stories have always been amazing. »
