Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a state of emergency in the city of Lod late Tuesday after mass unrest broke out amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Hamas, according to local reports.
Netanyahu visited the mixed Jewish-Arab city on Tuesday overnight and deciphered the « anarchy » in the streets that injured 12 people, reported the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
« It is an anarchy of rioters that we cannot accept, » he said, adding: “There is nothing without the rule of law.”
Thousands of mourners attended a funeral in Lod for an Arab man who had been killed by a suspected Jewish rifleman the previous night.
The crowd clashed with the Police got together and set fire to a synagogue and about 30 vehicles, including a police car, local reports said.
The government ordered param To send military border guards from the West Bank into the city, while Netanyahu said he would impose a curfew if necessary.
The city center is just 25 km from Tel Aviv, which the Hamas militant group hit with a nightly rocket fire from the Gaza strip aimed.
Hamas said it fired 130 rockets Tuesday night in retaliation for an Israeli strike that leveled a high-rise building in Gaza that housed the offices of senior Hamas officials. Israel launched air strikes after Hamas and other terrorist groups bombed several Israeli targets.
