CM – New way to see Supermoon up close

Aussies will be offered an exciting new way to get up close and personal with the super moon and lunar eclipses when it emerges later this month.

On May 26th, the flying kangaroo will make a three-hour scenic flight over Sydney before rising to 40,000 to see the final super moon and lunar eclipse of the year.

It’s the first time the airline has operated an Eclipse flight since its Boeing 747 took passengers on a 14-hour round-trip to chase a total solar eclipse in 2003.

The Sydney voyage will be on one of Qantas’ Boeing 787 Dreamliners and is based on several one-offs recently operated by the airline, including mystery flights and scenic low-level fly-bys.

A ticket for the experience is $ 499 for Economy, $ 899 for Premium Economy, and $ 1499 for Business. The tariffs are expected to go on sale on Wednesday.

Qantas chief customer officer Stephanie Tully said the latest mystery flights sold out within 15 minutes, an indication that Australians were looking for unique flying experiences.

« We’re excited to be doing a super moon sightseeing flight now, and the 787 has the largest windows of any passenger aircraft, making it ideal for lunar observation, » said Ms. Tully.

« We believe this flight will appeal to anyone who is passionate about astronomy, science, space photography, aviation, or just wants to do something extraordinary. »

The special thing about the lunar eclipse, which coincides with a super moon, is that the moon turns red against the night sky.

CSIRO assists Qantas pilots in determining the best flight path for the night to provide passengers with sufficient visibility.

The trip is expected to cross the Pacific Ocean, and CSIRO astronomer Dr. Vanessa Moss will be on the plane for more information on the rare spectacle.

On May 26, around 11:50 a.m. CEST, the moon will be closest to Earth, while the total lunar eclipse is scheduled to take place between 9:11 p.m. and 9:25 p.m.

The airline will also offer a bespoke moon-themed menu that includes cosmic cocktails and super moon cakes.
