Black Caps captain Kane Williamson and several other senior players were banned from upcoming trips to Bangladesh and Pakistan on Tuesday as New Zealand focuses on the Twenty20 World Cup.
New Zealand confirmed its World Cup line-up in an unprecedented 32-man squad for white balls to cope with a heavy workload in the next four months.
In addition to the World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and tours through Bangladesh and Pakistan, there is also a test series in New Zealand in India, whose squad will be named next month.
David White, CEO of New Zealand Cricket, said the changing times require changed strategies, with player welfare and support being one of the greatest challenges facing professional sport, especially in the current pandemic environment.
« The need to protect the well-being of our players and coaches is very real now, and we have « We’re striving to achieve this by carefully managing their workload during this massive game program (of the year), » said White.
New Zealand players participating in this year’s prematurely suspended Indian Premier League are allowed to return to their franchises when it starts again in September.
“It’s a pragmatic approach. We have always tried to be realistic about the IPL and this particular problem is an isolated incident caused by unique circumstances, « said White.
Tom Latham will lead the team in Bangladesh and Pakistan as captain, while Williamson competes for the Twenty20 World Cup, which begins October 17 in the United Arab Emirates.
Ross Taylor was originally selected for the three one-day internationals in Pakistan, but because of the shortness of the week-long streak and the length of the quarantine protocols it was decided that he would stay in New Zealand to prepare for the Indian test tour.
