The goal-hungry Ducks put their highest draft pick in 16 years against Mason McTavish, a potential power striker who played last season in Switzerland with his junior team, the Ontario Hockey League’s Peterborough Petes, because of that the coronavirus pandemic was closed.
The Ducks picked McTavish in third overall after the Buffalo Sabers Owen Power took first overall and the University of Michigan expansion Seattle Kraken Powers teammate Matthew Beniers took second.
General Manager Bob Murray coveted a dynamic striker in the draft after the Ducks had the worst offensive in the NHL while finishing penultimate overall with a 17-30-9 record. The Ducks averaged 2.21 goals per game and their power play clicked 8.9 percent, the worst in the league’s history.
