BOSTON – Brad Marchand scored two goals, Jake DeBrusk broke a 1-1 draw early in the third period and the Boston Bruins opened their season with a 3-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday evening.
Marchand scored in the first third after a penalty shot and added an empty shot on goal with 1:37 remaining. Nick Foligno, Erik Haula and David Pastrnak each had assists, and Jeremy Swayman stopped 27 shots for the Bruins who never fell back.
Luke Glendening scored for Dallas and Braden Holtby kept the stars close with 37 saves. Boston had the first nine shots and finished with a 40-28 lead.
« I thought we fought back but it’s hard to start hot on the heels, » said Glendening.
DeBrusk put Boston 2-1 ahead after 4:43 of the third period, grabbed the puck in front of the arch after Nick Foligno lost control and pushed him past Holtby.
Dallas didn’t get a shot in the net until 4:02 remained in the first game when Swayman easily handled a wrist shot from Jamie Benn. Less than two minutes later, Marchand stormed in just outside the Dallas zone for a turnover and shot at Holtby and took a penalty shot when Ryan Suter grabbed his stick.
Marchand collected the puck in center ice and went full Speed towards Holtby.
Glendening equalized with a wrist shot from the 9:15 slot in the second third.

PANTHERS 5, ISLANDERS 1: Sam Bennett scored his second career hat trick, Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots and Florida won at home.
Jonathan Huberdeau scored the 500th point of his career for Florida, and Anthony Duclair and Aleksander Barkov added goals for the Panthers.LIGHTNING 2, CAPITALS 1: Steven Stamkos scored the overtime winner, Andrei Vasilevskiy made 32 saves and Tampa Bay won in Washington.
BLUE JACKETS 2, KRAKEN 1: Patrick Laine scored after 2:16 overtime and gave Columbus a win from behind against the Seattle visit.
SABERS 2, COYOTES 1: days Thompson and Artuu Ruotsalainen scored on penalties and helped Buffalo win at home.
PINGUINS 5, BLACKHAWKS 2: Drew O’Connor scored his first NHL goal, Danton Heinen scored his third in three games and Pittsburgh scored four times in the first period,to beat the visit to Chicago.
MAPLE LEAFS 3, SENATORS 1: Alexander Kerfoot scored one goal and one assist, Michael Bunting scored his first home team goal and Toronto beat Ottawa.
