CM – « No sign of life »: Mate performs CPR at birthday party

A 21st birthday party in the Sunshine Coast hinterland took a dire turn when a young man had to perform CPR on his friend.

Bailey Sheen Townsend said he was at the party on Saturday night at a house on Plantation Road in the Glass House Mountains.

He said when he and a friend decided to leave, another man approached the couple in his late 20s.

« You (the man and his friend) only seemed to have a few words when we walked out and then it just came out of nowhere, » he said.

« He didn’t really get up after about 15 seconds, so I went to see if he was okay and he wasn’t, » he said.

The 22-year-old began resuscitating his friend who he said kept passing out.

« There was no blood, but there was no sign of life four times, » he said.

Mr Townsend said it was his first time doing CPR, despite having had about eight years of training based on his experience as a lifeguard.

« I had a good idea of what I was doing, but I was just taking instructions from the operator and not overriding the operator, » he said.

« I just followed her direction and every time there was a sign of life I would just say, ‘Stop CPR, lay him on your side and monitor,’ and then when he started losing signs of life, I just got back started CPR.  »

Paramedics arrived on site after Mr. Townsend performed CPR for about 15 minutes and took his friend to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for further treatment.

« I just started talking to some cops and then some detectives came and talked to me a bit, » he said.

Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Department assistant officer Chris Eaton said police participated in the incident Saturday night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Eaton said the 21-year-old’s injuries were less severe than initially reported and no complaint had been filed with police.

« There was no surgery, there was just testing and as far as I know, and then he spent the night in the hospital, » he said.

Although he was « still shaken and a little confused » after the incident, Mr. Townsend urged others to reconsider their actions.

« A blow can kill, so just (urge) people not to do stupid things like that, » he said.
